LaGrange, Georgia =

Fine Georgia Food, Unique shops, and the Beautiful Manicured
Gardens of Hills and Dales Estate.

John C. Jones, Editor
Travel Photojournalist

LaGrange, Georgia, a really fun place to visit.  In an "easy reach of the city," here is fishing, water sports at West Point Lake, golf, Callaway Gardens,  and a ton of other great things to see and do.

"LaGrange, located about 60 miles southwest of Atlanta, is a classic Georgia town. LaGrange is a progressive community offering a full slate of cultural, recreational and educational opportunities... yet still retaining its' traditional Southern charm. A vibrant community of 27,000 people, LaGrange is home to major businesses from around the world.

Located at the intersection of Interstates 85 and 185, LaGrange and Troup County are home to beautiful country, scenic attractions and a comfortable, warm climate. West Point Lake, just west of town, is ideal for boating, fishing and many other outdoor activities.

Our town is known as the City Of Elms And Roses. Classic antebellum homes proudly attest to the rich history of LaGrange, incorporated in 1828."  The home to the oldest independent accredited liberal arts 4 year college, LaGrange College.

Golf:

The greater LaGrange area is home to many well manicured  golf courses, both public and private, and a list just a few a few of the course in and around LaGrange:

The Fields                             18 hole: public

Highland Country Club           18 hole: private

Callaway Gardens            3-   18 hole courses: public

American Legion                     9 holes: public

Orchard Hills                          27 holes: public

Hogansville Golf Club              9 holes: public

One of the fine places to take a family, or for fishermen to come and stay while fishing West Point Lake, is Highland Marina...

Highland Marina has cottages and cabins provide accommodations for 4 to 12 people and feature full kitchen facilities with microwaves, pots, pans, dishes, coffee maker, cooking and eating utensils and Weber grills.  Yes, they are equipped with high speed wireless internet,. All lodging includes towels, bedding, 78 channel color cable TV, air conditioning and heat and: children under 8 stay for free! It is suggested you make reservations as far ahead as possible due to the popularity of this "picture perfect" water front setting.

Fishermen, this is as good as it gets:  A unique feature is the "floating dock house for lodging. located in the middle of our boat docks giving you the ability to literally roll out of bed and into your boat, or fish from your porch all night!  The Floating Dock House is a two bedroom, one bathroom floating cabin equipped with all the comforts of home like high speed wireless internet, a full kitchen, a Den with color cable TV, central air-conditioning & heat, and a 'porch' that can't be beat. There is a full bed in one bedroom and two twin beds in the other bedroom." I have personally visited the facilities of Highland Marina and I can give it an Editor's Choice without hesitation!  You won't be disappointed here!  The 641 Gill will give you enough choices of fine food to satisfy any diner's desire. Caution fishermen: The cabins and rooms are so well appointed, and beautifully designed you may not want to leave them to fish.

Hills and Dales Estate

Great for Tour Groups, Individuals

Textile magnate Fuller E. Callaway, Sr. and the ancestors have left America with one of the best preserved 19th century gardens to be found in America.  Most of the garden was created prior to the 1900's by Sarah Ferrell.  The 35 acre estate is the home to an "Italian villa" which was completed in 1916.  Now, a beautiful new visitor center (photo below) welcomes the travelers with audio/visual, , museum exhibits, and a gift shop.  Allow at least a couple of hours to visit this delightfully relaxing and beautiful estate.  There is an introductory fifteen minute video about the legacy of the estate.   From the classic outdoor terrace, you will see the terraces carved into the mulit-layered hillside.  From there a tram will take you up to the house (yes, it is equipped for rain protection).  A guided tour of the first floor of the Callaway family home will give you a glimpse into the life style of the family.  Some fourty-five minutes later you leave the home to the 176 year old garden and walk among magnolias planted from seeds given by Confederate soldiers to Sarah.

The gardens are convenient to Callaway Gardens, Wild Animal Safari in Pine Mountain, Columbus (full of historic meseums and homes, West Point, and many other Georgia attractions.
