Amy Walkingwolf and Hand Blown ScentJewel Vases of Maui

John C. Jones, Editor

Amy WalkingwolfThere are a few times in my life that I come across something, or some person, who is so special that I want to devote an entire article to that subject. In this case, it is for both reasons – something and somebody.

I was staying in Maui Embassy Suites (which I can recommend as an excellent central location on the North West side of the island  in the Kaanapali area), and passing through the lobby I noticed an island booth display of unusual, quaint, miniature vases – all with beautiful swirl designs inside of them. Upon inquiry from the designer vases and overseer of the both, I found that she hand blows the items and it is truly a creative art form. This was my first encounter with Amy Walkingwolf. Amy is just as unique and delightfully mysterious as the art forms she produces.

Amy Wakingwolf brings something new, elegant and quite unexpected to the worlds of art, jewelry and glass. She calls her work Scent jewels, miniature fine art glass vessel pendants that function as a beautiful bottle for perfume or aromatherapy.

Creating these magical miniature masterpieces comes from her deep love of glass and her life long passion of aromatherapy. Her vision is to create beautiful, functional, spiri-tool vessels that can be worn as a piece of jewelry

Her work begins by fusing micro-thin layers of either gold or silver to the inside of a tube of crystal clear glass. This gives the work a warm soft luminescence depth and elegance that invites you into a magical, miniature world of wonder.

She calls this effect of the precious metals, the moonlight, which is can be either a pinkish coral glow, by infusing 22carat gold fume, or a soft whispery whiteish-blue opalescent glow which is created using a 99.9% fine silver fume.

Hand Blow GlassShe then fuses delicate striations of color to the inside of the glass tube, which she chooses intuitively, to make what she calls a color palate, a tube of colored glass that can create anywhere from 3 to 6 scent jewels.

Completely self taught her style is unique in the world of glass. For years she was challenged by the question of how to seal the vessels air tight, and still retain the elegance and whimsical beauty that was part of her vision for her bottle pendants. Glass on glass broke too easily, and cork was so limiting on so many levels. She began a journey that spanned 7 years researching and developing what she playfully calls the “seven year seal”, a layering process of polymers that coat the stopper to provide a clear, beautiful, non-corrosive, airtight seal.

The following are some of the quotes she shared with me.

  Hand Blown Glass

“When I was a small child I discovered that I had the ability to send healing energy through my hands. As I got older I began to want to develop this ability, and this led me onto a spiritual path of learning Native American Shamanism and the ancient Japanese Healing Art of Reiki.

I developed my abilities in Boulder Colorado, which blossomed in to a cable TV show about healing modalities, as well as a six-year healing and wellness practice. However after a while I began to feel the need to feed and focus on the artistic side of my soul.

I had always been drawn to glass, there was something transformational about the way color and light played in this medium. Glass blowing in particular held a special fascination for me.

From the very earliest days on the torch, I held the vision for ScentJewels, a wearable work of art offering the wearer a feeling of uniqueness and elegance as they go about their day.

All of my work, in fact my whole life, has been inspired by this quote from the day I first heard it: Thoughts become words, words become actions, actions become habit, habit becomes personality and personality becomes destiny.

I realized that it was not only possible to navigate my life by the thoughts I think, but that in fact that all human beings already are doing it but the vast majority of us are not conscious of it and there fore not using it to create the dreams and desires of our hearts.

Put a drop of a fragrance in your ScentJewel and take a deep nourishing breath deeply into your whole body."   Happy Traveling.
