Breckenridge, Colorado

B & B's for Exciting Skiing

John C. Jones
Travel/Food Writer

Breckenridge, Colorado is a place of winter beauty that attracts people from over America once temperatures and snow begin to fall.  The Victorian charm of the buildings with the white snow backdrop makes a scene that is inviting beyond compare.  Against a backdrop of soaring peaks, periwinkle blue skies, and historic Victorian architecture lies the quaint mountain town of Breckenridge, Colorado.  Breckenridge's Historic Main Street features more than 300 restaurants, shops and boutiques, many reflecting the true Wild West with false front buildings and saloon entrances.

Holiday season in Breckenridge, Colorado, is truly magical. Victorian ambiance, twinkling lampposts, roaming carolers and the Lighting of the Town Christmas Tree all set the perfect scene for a mountain holiday.

Breckenridge Ski Resort’s Terrain Parks and Superpipe have consistently been ranked the top in Colorado and one of the tops in North America. Snowboarders love riding in the 2,208 acres of terrain

The International Snow Sculpture Competition takes place in Breckenridge every January. Teams from around the world start with 12-foot-tall, 20-ton blocks of ice and carve their way to works of art.

At  http://www.breck.net/mountaincam.cfm one can even see live cams viewing the skiing on various slopes.

Some of the local B & Bs that I can recommend are:

This is a grand hotel with the charm of a country inn.  Or is it a country inn with the charm of a grand hotel?  Log cabin logepole pine provides the structure for this romantic get-a-way!  There are 10 rooms, including two suites, all with private shower-bath, two with fireplaces, each with a private deck.  There is one room handicap / wheelchair accessable.                                                                    Each room is named for a Colorado mountain                                                                      pass.

Morning brings a breakfast delight that ranges from fresh-baked bread, apple-carrot muffins or cheddar-cheese loaf, sausage quiche, and other delicious items.

Here has to be four of the most difficult room choices one would ever have to make.   The Main Floor Room is country, while the Victorian Room  is filled with antiques such as a cast iron bed that once belonged to a miner.  The Colorado Room has a queen-size four poster bed with lace curtains and more antiquest.  The Room  With A View has  pine walls, oak floors, and overlooks the ski slopes.  There are two rooms that share a bath, and two with private baths.
